The local map pack, explained

The local map pack, explained

Search for almost any local service — “plumber near me”, “dentist in Nottingham” — and before the normal results, Google shows a map with three businesses pinned to it. That box is the local map pack, and for local searches it quietly wins most of the clicks and calls.

Here’s what it is, why it matters so much, and the levers that actually move you into it.

What the map pack actually is

It’s the block of three local businesses Google shows with a map, star ratings and a phone number, right at the top of the results. It pulls from Google Business Profiles, not from your website directly — which is why a great website alone won’t put you there.

Why it wins the calls

It sits above the normal blue links, it shows your rating and a call button, and on a phone it fills the first screen. For someone ready to book, it’s the path of least resistance — most never scroll past it.

For a local search, the map pack is the shop window — and most of your competitors have left theirs half-empty.

How Google decides who’s in it

Three things, roughly: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (reviews, activity and consistent information across the web). You can’t change distance, but relevance and prominence are firmly in your hands.

How you get in

Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, pick the right categories, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, and earn a steady trickle of genuine reviews. Consistency and reviews are what tip close-but-not-quite businesses into the pack.

The quick wins

Claim your Google Business Profile and fill in every field.
Choose the most specific primary category you can.
Match your name, address and phone exactly across every listing.
Ask happy customers for a review while the job’s still fresh.

None of this is quick-fix magic — the map pack rewards consistency over months — but it’s the highest-leverage free marketing most local businesses are ignoring. If you’re not sure how your profile stacks up, that’s part of what a teardown checks.
