It sounds like an odd question — you paid for your website, so of course it’s yours. But a surprising number of small businesses find out the hard way that their domain, their site or their data is locked to an agency they’ve outgrown.
Three quick checks tell you whether you’re actually in control.
1. Is the domain in your name?
Your domain (yourbusiness.co.uk) should be registered to you, with you as the registrant and admin contact — not your web designer. If it’s sitting in someone else’s account, they, not you, control your web address and often your email with it.
2. Can you reach the hosting and files?
You should have login access to wherever the site lives, and the ability to take a full copy of it. If moving to a new developer means rebuilding from scratch because no one will hand over the files, you don’t really own the site.
3. Do you control your content and data?
Your text, images and — especially — your enquiry and customer data should be exportable and yours. A site that traps your content in a system you can’t leave is a rental, not a purchase.
Your ownership checklist
Owning your website outright isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s leverage. It means you can move, improve or negotiate without anything held hostage. Every site we build is yours completely, but it’s worth checking the one you have now.
